Cityscape Basics

Initial steps

  1. Register
To contribute to Cityscapes you first must register. You will receive a password sent to your email address. You can later change your password using the Update Profile button at the bottom of the page.
  2. Log in using your password
  3. Click on the Add Site Button at the top of the page or on the Add Site link which is listed under Maps in the left-hand column of this page. A Google Map will load; initially it will try to show the city from which you are logged in.

The Map

Adding a Page

  1. Select a place on the map either by clicking on the map or by entering an address in the Location bar and clicking Go! The red place marker will appear at the selected location and the Add Page dialogue will appear above the map. The small blue markers identify places that have already been selected.
  2. Enter the name of your new page in the Add Page text box and click the button.
  3. You will be redirected to an editing window, where you can create your page, add images, and save the result. You can always come back and re-edit. Links to your pages will appear in the left-hand column under the heading Your Places.

Note: Your page always remains attached to the location you've selected on the map.

Creating your Page

Once you have added your page as described above, the editing window will appear. Simply begin typing in your text. When you are finished, click the Save button.

To add an image, click on the add images icon:

A pop-up window will appear. Click on the Upload tab. A second pop-up will appear enabling you to upload your image. Once it is uploaded, you can use the first pop-up window to add the image to your text. Click on the Browse server button. A window listing all of your images will appear. Select your image by clicking on its name and the image will automatically be added to your text.

The Editors

There are two editors. The default is the FCKeditor, the kind of graphical editor familiar from applications like MS Word and Wordperfect. The other is the DokuWiki editor, which is text-based and uses a set of 'mark-up' symbols characteristic of wikis.

  Location Info X
Cityscapes stores your pages by Country and City (or Place).
Sometimes the database supplies geographical names that are not an accurate reflection of the location requested when you click 'Go!'. It may find instead a nearby town or regional name or a city neighborhood or a park or some other landmark.
Make any necessary corrections, using the City/Place text box. This will insure that your pages for a particular location are grouped together.
Note: The latitudes and longitudes shown are always correct.
