The DokuWiki Text Editor

The default editor for this site has a graphical interface. But this project uses wiki technology, specifically DokuWiki, and wikis generally use text-based editors, with simple mark-up rules for formatting your text. For instance, if you want to put a word in bold, you surround the word with two pairs of asterisks:

**make me bold**

The formatting will show up after you have clicked the Save Button or when you click on Preview. You can type in the various formatting symbols yourself, or your can use the toolbar, which is described below.

If you would like to use the text-based editor, click on the DW Edit button at the bottom of the editing screen. This will bring up the standard DokuWiki editing screen. You can always revert to the graphical editor by clicking on the FCK Edit button which appears at the bottom of the DokuWiki editing screen. 'FCK' stands for FCKeditor, the graphical editor that this site uses.

The toolbar

You can format your text using the toolbar which appears at the top of the editing window. These are some of the basic icons:

Bold, Italic, Underline

The first three icons are B for bold, I for italic, and U for underline.

Using the mouse and/or keyboard, select the text you want to format and click on the appropriate icon. If you don't pre-select the text, then the formatting symbols will appear, surrounding temporary text:

 • **Bold Text**
 • //Italic Text//
 • __Underlined Text__

Replace the temporary text with your own. These symbols are simple enough to remember, and eventually you will find that you will be typing them in yourself without the help of the toolbar.

The Five Heading Levels

H1 gives the largest heading size and H5 the smallest, with virtually no difference in size and weight between H5 and simple bold text.

When you use a heading, it is set apart and placed on a line by itself, with a blank line above it and a blank line below it, as in the headings on this page. The two largest headings are underlined, and each next smaller heading is indented. These features are illustrated by the headings on this page.

People familiar with some HTML will recognize the five levels of headings as the headings obtained by using <H1> through <H5>.

Creating Links

Creating Links to other web sites is simple. Just type in the name of the page you want to link to. For instance, www.room535.org becomes www.room535.org.

Sometimes you want to use an alternate title for the link, for instance: Go to Room 535. You can do this with the link button:

When you click on the link button you get the following:
         Link
Substitute your own URL and Link name. If you don't want an alternate link name, just omit it.

Examples
1.    Turner's Web Site
This will produce: Turner's Web Site.
2.    http://www.mturner.org
This will produce: http://www.mturner.org.

Note: When using the link button and the square brackets syntax, you must include the http:// prefix.

Horizontal Rules, Images, Special Characters

The third from last icon will produce a blue horizontal line:

The last icon in the toolbar gives you access to various special characters. For instance:

¼ É ∑ ☎ ß

When you click on the icon, a menu will drop down; you select the special characters by clicking on them.

The next-to-last icon is used for uploading images and placing them on your pages. Click on the icon and the image manager will pop up. You use this both to uplaod images and to insert them into your text. To insert an image, place your cursor where you want the image to appear and then click on its name in the image manager. The DokuWiki image mark-up for that image will appear at the cursor.

If you want a tool-tip to pop up when the mouse goes over the image, then add a title after the vertical bar:

Then you will get this effect:
image

To place an image left, right, or centered, you use spaces either to the left, right, or to both sides of the image name. The latter will center the image.

Other Editing Features

In addition to the features described above, you can also create tables and add numbered and bulleted lists. For the complete description of the DokuWiki mark-up rules, see the DokuWiki Formatting Rules.

Cityscapes stores your pages by Country and City (or Place).
Sometimes the database supplies geographical names that are not an accurate reflection of the location requested when you click 'Go!'. It may find instead a nearby town or regional name or a city neighborhood or a park or some other landmark.
Make any necessary corrections, using the City/Place text box. This will insure that your pages for a particular location are grouped together.
